About Us

Why the guru school?

We’re dedicated to our community and students

The Guru School is leading the way in North Carolina by creating the most well rounded individuals. We pride ourselves on teaching students about giving back to their community as well as preparing them to play basketball at collegiate levels.

Meet Coach Mike Jones

The Guru School was founded and is led by Coach Micheal (Mike) Jones. Coach Jones has been dedicated to mentoring children for over 15 years. He started alongside his father as a volunteer with The Durham Eagles where he gained invaluable experience.

Mike Jones' career, for over 10 years, has consisted of working with children at the Durham Parks and Recreation Department and the Chapel Hill/Carrboro Public School System. Mike's most recent experience working with and mentoring over 100 elementary aged special needs children, as a teacher's assistant and as a high school basketball coach has contributed to the indispensable skills and knowledge needed to lead The Guru School.

In addition to his academic and coaching history, Mike played basketball at the collegiate level and has participated in training camps, both domestically and internationally. Coach Mike Jones is regarded as one of the premier basketball trainers in North Carolina, he is a wealth of knowledge that any child or student athlete will benefit from.

Life Skills through

Basketball Training

One of The Guru School’s core strategies is to engage youth through the sport of basketball. Through basketball, we teach critical life skills such as personal work ethic, self-image, teamwork, and confidence.

The Guru School uses basketball training as a vehicle to go beyond athletic goals. We host group discussion sessions with students during training to talk about various topics. This open door of communication provides an avenue to offer mentorship from The Guru School’s Executive Director, Micheal Jones. In addition, older Guru School students will learn leadership skills by coaching and tutoring younger students – creating a foundation that promotes healthy collaboration skills. Ultimately, by tapping into a students’ passion for basketball, The Guru School provides a nurturing, supportive and collaborative environment for students to grow into young adults who may serve more broad roles within their community.

After School Care

In our care, students of all ages can access peer-centric tutoring assistance in the learning center. The learning center is a multipurpose space with a classroom style set up, which can accommodate up to 20 students. Tutors for after school care consist of high school and college-aged volunteers. If you're interested in providing tutoring services at The Guru School, please CONTACT US to apply. In addition to tutoring, students will have free time to use the recreational facilities for basketball, yoga, and other activities.

Remote Learning Pod

Additionally, we are adapting to the pandemic by introducing learning pods. Our learning pod service provides students K-5th grade the opportunity to learn together in a safe, WIFI-connected environment. Under the supervision of licensed teachers, we will assist with their virtual learning while allowing parents to work. The curriculum is set by each student’s respective school and/or school district. A sample schedule for the learning pods will be:

  • 8:00-11:00 am – Class Work
  • 11:00-12:00 pm – Lunch
  • 12:00-1:00 pm – Recreational Time
  • 1:00-3:30 pm – Various Activities
(Including but not limited to arts and crafts, gardening and nature time, homework assistance, math skills, yoga, and group discussions focused on leadership and mentorship.)

School's out!

Spring & Summer Camps

Spring and summer camps (aka Camp Guru) are for elementary aged children and are available in March-April and June-August. Our camps consist of games, sports, lunch/snacks, and various educational activities.

Each camp that we offer will be similarly structured. Our campers will engage in a relaxed and fun environment that challenges them intellectually, physically, and emotionally. Campers will partake in various games, sports, and educational activities. Outside of our daily program we’ll schedule special days where the kids might learn yoga from an instructor or work with a visiting local artist. And of course, don’t forget pizza lunch on Fridays!
